How do I report a water and sewer outage?
The City of Fayetteville relies on your calls to let us know that there is a water or sewer problem that needs to be evaluated. If you suspect a water main break, a sewer overflow, or any type of related problem, please call the Fayetteville Water and Sewer Maintenance Division.
These are all situations that require trained personnel to assess the problem and associated dangers. Be ready to identify the type of problem and its location, as well as your name, address, and contact information so that officials can contact you should we need more information. If you supply us an email address, we may be able to update you by email on our progress of correcting the reported problem.
To report a problem, or for more information, contact the Water and Wastewater Maintenance Department. For after-hours problems of this nature, you may phone Fayetteville Police Central Dispatch for assistance at 479-587-3555 and choose option 1.

Whom do I call about a missing or loose manhole, meter lid or storm drain cover?
Missing or loose manhole and meter lids are repaired and replaced through Water and Sewer Maintenance, 479-575-8386. Storm drain covers are repaired and replaced through the Fayetteville Transportation Department, 479-575-8228.

I received a notice that my water supply will be interrupted for construction. What should I be prepared for?
Water stoppages are infrequent, but they do occur and it's wise to be prepared for the emergency. The City of Fayetteville Water and Sewer Maintenance Division often knows about the problem and is working to solve it before you even call.
Before a water stoppage occurs, have a supply of bottled water to use for drinking or sponge-bathing. If you have no water, check with your neighbors to see if the problem is just with your home. With that information and the general description of the problem, call the Fayetteville Call Center to find out if the problem is mechanical or if your service has been disconnected. Our Call Center will be able to quickly assess the situation and recommend a solution to you. If your neighbors are also without water, city officials are most likely aware of the stoppage and are working to restore your service.

My water is off and I am not sure why. What I should I do?
Call the Fayetteville Call Center to find out if the problem is mechanical or if your service has been disconnected. Our Call Center will be able to quickly assess the situation and recommend a solution to you.

What is the process for installing a new water or sewer tap?
Contact Engineering at 479-575-8206. Additional information can be found in Title V Public Works Code, Chapter 51.

How do I request utility line locates before I dig?
If you are planning to dig on your property where utilities such as electric, water, telephone, or natural gas lines may be buried, you are required by law to notify Arkansas One Call at 800-482-8998. It's a free call for you, and they notify all the utilities in your area to mark their main lines within two working days. By contacting Arkansas One Call before you dig, you will be protected from possibly serious injuries and from the liability that would result from damaging underground utilities.

and information can be found on the City of Fayetteville website, and through the Beaver Water District website. There you will find public information about rain, runoff and other environmental factors and how they affect our drinking water.

What is backflow?
Backflow occurs when the water in your pipes (the pipes after the water meter) flows backward (in the opposite direction of normal flow). Two situations can cause the water to flow backward (backflow). Backpressure occurs when the pressure in your pipes is greater than the pressure coming in. Backsiphonage is caused by a negative pressure in one of the pipes. To protect the water system, two kinds of backflow prevention assemblies (devices that prevent the backflow of water) are required for all business customers that present a potential hazard to the City’s water system. An external device protects the city’s water from cross connection with the water on the customer’s premises. An internal device protects the customer from potentially hazardous cross connections within their own system.

What kinds of hazards do backflow assemblies prevent?
Backflow prevention controls two types of hazards: pollution and contamination of your drinking water supply. A pollutant is any substance which affects the color or odor of the water, but does not pose a health hazard. A contaminant causes illness or death when ingested.

What is a cross connection?
A connection between your drinking water and another unapproved source of water. When a backflow condition occurs, the two sources combine, possibly contaminating the drinking water source.

Does my backflow prevention device need to be tested?
Yes, to ensure the device is functioning properly, the City of Fayetteville requires annual testing. Backflow preventers are mechanical units that have internal seals, springs, and moving parts that are subject to wear and fatigue. The annual test ensures a properly functioning device and certifies that the unit has not been removed or by-passed.
