Park History

In 1978, The City of Fayetteville decided to utilize the Downtown Square for a public park/plaza area. With that, the Downtown Square Gardens were born. Every year, thousands of residents enjoy the gardens and plants around the historic Old Post Office and around the businesses of downtown. In the fall, this area is home of the Lights of the Ozarks Festival. The Fayetteville Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates 200,000 people visit the Downtown Square during the month of December.

The Square Gardens is also host of the Farmer's Market every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings from early April through November. On these days, local farmers set up booths to sell plants, flowers, fruit, vegetables, art and more.
