CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE TO OFFER COMPOST DELIVERY FOR RESIDENTS

FAYETTEVILLE, ARK – The City of Fayetteville is excited to announce that delivery of food-waste compost is now available to Fayetteville residents while quantities last.  Food-waste compost is made using recovered food waste from schools and restaurants, which is mixed with yard-waste materials at the City’s compost facility.  The food-waste program was recently enacted to divert more materials from the landfill and help with the City’s overall goal of 40% diversion by 2027. Nutrient-rich compost helps create healthy soil to allow residents to grow their own food during the pandemic crisis.

The service includes delivery of two cubic yards of compost for the cost of $75. Low- to moderate-income households, or those newly unemployed could be eligible for free or reduced pricing.  Eligibility will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Delivery will be to residential homes only; no commercial properties will be part of this new service.  A maximum of two yards of compost will be delivered, and mulch will not be delivered.

To schedule the service, residents need to call the Recycling and Trash Collection office at 479-575-8398 and sign up for the delivery option.  Delivery will be made with a grapple truck and can only be delivered to locations close to a street, free of overhanging wires, and away from structures like poles and mailboxes.

Additional Food Waste drop off option now available

The City is also announcing that a third site for food-waste drop-off is now available.  The Happy Hollow Recycling Drop-off facility, located at 1420 S. Happy Hollow Road, will have a food-waste cart available where residents may place their food waste.  Residents are encouraged to use a reusable container, not lined with plastic, to drop off food waste at one of the three (3) locations listed below.

The City is working hard to meet an important goal of diverting at least 40% of all waste from the landfill by the year 2027.  Composting of food waste not suitable for human or animal consumption will be essential to meeting that goal. Food waste makes up approximately 18 percent of the City waste stream going to the landfill. When organic material sits in the landfill it breaks down anaerobically, without oxygen, and creates methane gas which is a major contributor to climate change.

The food waste collected through this program will be processed into nutrient-rich compost and available for purchase at the city compost site located at 1708 S. Armstrong Ave or delivered as part of the City’s new compost delivery program.  Yard-waste compost can be purchased for $25 per 2 cubic yard scoop. Food-waste compost, which has a higher nutrient content, can be purchased for $35 per 2 cubic yard scoop.
