FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The City of Fayetteville installed its first on-street bicycle parking corral today. The corral has six parking racks that can accommodate up to 12 bicycles and was installed in response to requests from local business owners who cited increased demand for bicycle parking.

Bicycle corrals provide on-street bicycle parking and occupy space similar to that of one vehicle parking space. Corrals work best in areas where sidewalks are too narrow to accommodate bicycle racks or in areas with high demand for bicycle parking. The City’s first corral is located in an area close to a stop sign that did not meet minimum requirements for a vehicle parallel parking space.

The newly installed corral, located at the northwest corner of the W. Center Street and N. Church Avenue intersection, is designed to be highly visible with yellow reflective delineator posts and yellow and black parking blocks. The steel racks were manufactured and installed by the City’s Transportation Department; a local vendor powder coated the racks bright yellow. The project cost approximately $1,100 to complete and was funded through the Parking Management Division’s bicycle parking budget.

The bicycle corral is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to promote a more pedestrian and bicycle friendly community by providing convenient, high-quality bicycle parking. Fayetteville is currently the only city in Arkansas to receive a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community designation by the League of American Bicyclists.
