Historic Bridges Restoration Winds Down on Lafayette Street and Begins on Maple Street
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The historic renovation project of the Lafayette Street and Maple Street overpass bridges will reach notable milestones in the next two weeks. Crews will be working on both bridges with the goal of opening the roadways to traffic by the start of the school year and the return of university students. The closures apply to vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic.
Closure schedule: • W. Lafayette Street (West Avenue to Gregg Avenue): 24/hours day, July 21 – July 28
• W. Maple Street (Wilson Avenue to Gregg Avenue): 24/hours day, July 21 – August 19 • Gregg Avenue (Lafayette Street to Reagan Street) 24/hours day, July 21 – August 19
Infrastructure improvements and restoration details such as lighting, railing restoration, and traffic striping may require temporary additional road closures in the area before and after August 19. The Frisco Trail section of the Razorback Greenway and the Frisco Railroad line will remain open.
A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held in the fall of 2016 when both renovation projects are complete. The Lafayette Street and Maple Street overpass bridges are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In keeping with the City’s dedication to historic heritage and preservation, the City has strived to restore both historic bridges in accordance with federal standards and state guidelines related to restoration of historic structures while meeting current requirements.
A map detailing the closures and information about the historic bridges such as funding, condition, and history can be found on the City’s website here.
