Fayetteville’s Code Compliance Receives Best Before and After Award

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The City of Fayetteville’s Code Compliance Program recently received the American Association of Code Enforcement’s Best Before and After Award for populations over 40,000. The Code Compliance Program works to enhance neighborhoods and to ensure the health, safety, and general welfare of residents. The American Association of Code Enforcement (AACE) is a national non-profit organization that represents and promotes the profession of Code Enforcement through Education and Training, Certification Program, and Career Development.

A 1.4 acre parcel of bank-owned residential property located in south Fayetteville contained an enormous amount of junk and debris. Citizens and neighbors were concerned about safety due to the condition of the property. City staff followed procedure to notify the property owners about making the property safe and bringing it within compliance of City code. Fayetteville City Council approved a “clean-up, raze, and removal” after the deadlines for compliance passed.

In total the project spanned seven days as Code Compliance worked diligently with a local contracting company to demolish several dilapidated structures, remove remnants, and properly dispose of a variety of materials. Over 156,000 lbs. of junk and debris were removed from the parcel.

The project is a notable achievement for the City’s program as it provides a strong foundation for moving forward on other nuisance properties of similar magnitude. Code Compliance extends a very large “Thank You” to all involved in the project as they continue to ensure that our community stays safe, clean, and beautiful.
