Woodland-Poplar Trail Connection Completed Prior to School Year

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The City of Fayetteville has recently completed construction of the Woodland-Poplar Trail Connection, an eight foot wide paved trail designed to improve a biking and walking route to Woodland Junior High School. Residents in the neighborhood adjoining the school approached the City in 2014 about the possibility of creating a connection. The City worked with property owners, acquiring necessary easements, to create the much needed trail connection.

The eastern part of the trail is located two blocks from Woodland Junior High School, at the corner of N. Yates Avenue and W. Poplar Street. The trail extends 400 feet to the west, ending at the intersection of N. Gregg Avenue and W. Poplar Street, where a pedestrian push button and painted crosswalk are installed. The trail connection now links neighborhoods on the east and west side of N. Gregg Avenue and provides access to the Scull Creek Trail and the Razorback Regional Greenway.

The Woodland-Poplar Trail Connection is part of a $39,940 project funded by the Endeavor Foundation to improve walking and biking routes near Fayetteville Public Schools. In addition to trail construction, the project included installation of signage and road makings to encourage safe bicycling near Asbell Elementary, Leverett Elementary, and Woodland Junior High schools.

Active Transportation has many health, economic, and social benefits; the City of Fayetteville has placed great emphasis on active transportation for safe routes to schools and in planning for future developments.
