RESCHEDULED:  Ribbon Cutting at Skate Park Rescheduled to Tuesday, June 22

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark – Due to inclement weather, the City of Fayetteville Parks and Recreation Department’s ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the installation of new LED lights around Grinders Skate Park has been rescheduled to Tuesday, June 22 at 4 p.m. The event will take place at Walker Park, on the northeast side of Grinders Skate Park, which is accessible by paved trail from a parking lot located just north of the Walker Park Splash Pad.

Skate park users will be able to turn on the new lights with a button. Lights will turn off automatically when Walker Park closes at 11 p.m. The lighting project was paid for with Parks Development funds.

Grinders Skate Park opened in September 2003.  The park was designed by Purkis Rose with input from city residents regarding which elements they wanted in the design.  Nationally recognized skateboard professional Frank Hirata led several of the design meetings.  The City received several grants to help build the project:  $100,000 from an Arkansas Parks and Tourism Outdoor Recreation Grant; $5,000 from the Tony Hawk Foundation; and $5,623 in community donations raised through lemonade sales, birthday donations and raffles. In addition to grant funding, the City provided $350,000 in Park Land Ordinance and Capital Improvement (HMR) funds.
