City Announces Completion of Final Stage of Rupple Road Extension

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— The City of Fayetteville announces that the final segment of the Rupple Road extension project is now complete. The final segment, between Tanyard Drive and Weir Road, was constructed in two separate projects: one through a cost-share agreement with a Rupple Road property developer, and one by the City as part of the 2019 Transportation Bond Program, approved by a vote of Fayetteville residents last April.

The completion of the Rupple Road extension also finalizes construction of the 20-mile arterial loop of Fayetteville, known as the “Mayor’s Box.” This is a system of east/west and north/south roadways around the perimeter of the city, along with miles of trails and sidewalks, designed to redistribute traffic from busy thru streets. The arterial loop helps to ease congestion and create travel-time savings by reducing delay, providing more direct routes and increasing capacity along the improved roadways.

Opened on Jan. 6, 2021, this section of Rupple Road includes four lanes of travel with landscaped and lighted medians, turn lanes at key intersections, sidewalk along the east side, and a multi-use trail along the west side. Trees have been planted in the median as well as in the greenspace between the curb and the sidewalk/trail. The center median also serves as a water quality swale that filters stormwater before it enters the drainage system.

This marks an important milestone in implementation of the City of Fayetteville’s Mobility Plan, which was finalized in 2018. The plan includes strategies not only to improve and develop mobility for cars, but also to improve other mobility options through construction of trails and sidewalks and by facilitating improvements in public transit.
