Fayetteville Adds Cardboard Containers at Recycling Drop-Off Sites, Encourages Residential Food Waste Drop-Off at Farmer’s Market and Other Locations

FAYETTEVILLE, ARK – The City of Fayetteville is making some changes at two recycling drop-off sites in order to meet the community’s recycling needs.

Earlier this year the regional newspaper went to once-a-week printing, which has reduced the amount of newspaper in the recycling stream.  At the same time, the volume of cardboard is increasing as more residents are ordering products online for home delivery. As a result, the City has removed separate newspaper containers and added additional cardboard containers at both of its recycling drop-off locations. The public can still recycle newspaper at both locations by placing the newspaper into the mixed-paper containers. Newspaper recycling in the curbside service will remain unchanged.

The recycling drop-off sites, which are currently available 24 hours a day include:

  • Happy Hollow Recycling Drop-Off, located at 1420 S. Happy Hollow Road
  • Marion Orton Recycling Drop-Off, located at 735 W. North Street

To help increase food-waste composting across the community, the City reminds residents of several locations where they may drop off food waste to be included in the City’s composting program.

Drop-off locations and hours for food waste are:

  • Happy Hollow Recycling Center:  Site open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day
  • Marion Orton Recycling Center:  Site currently open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day
  • City Compost and Mulch Facility

1708 S. Armstrong Avenue
Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Nov. – March: First Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. to noon

  • Fayetteville Farmer’s Market

Southeast corner of the Downtown Fayetteville Square and Gardens
Dec. 5 and Dec. 19 from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

 Acceptable food waste materials are:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Coffee and tea grounds with paper filters
  • Diary and non-dairy items such as cheese and yogurt
  • Bread, dough, bakery items, pasta, and grains
  • Eggs and eggshells
  • Cooked meats and fish
  • Processed foods: pizza, cereal, chips, crackers
  • Plate scraps

Please do not put the following materials in your compost.

  • Raw meats (fish, poultry, pork, seafood, beef)
  • Fats, oils, grease, non-consumable liquids, vegetable oil, lard
  • Wood, metal, glass or other non-food items
  • Regular plastic bags, serve ware, utensils, twist ties, rubber bands

Residents are encouraged to bring food waste in a sealable, lidded container that can be dumped into a larger cart for the collection.  Compostable plastic bags and wares must be branded “BPI Certified” before being accepted.

Food waste collected through this program is combined with the commercial food waste collection and processed into food waste compost, which can be purchased at the City’s Compost Facility located at 1708 S. Armstrong Ave, during posted hours of operation.
