City Seeks Public Input on Possible Regulation of Single-Use Plastic

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark— Fayetteville’s City Council recently passed a resolution to “consider regulation of single use plastic shopping bags and difficult to recycle or compost single use plates, bowls, cups, and utensils.”

City staff and the Environmental Action Committee are researching public opinion through surveys, consulting with businesses, exploring alternative product pricing and availability, and examining successful programs in other cities.

Two surveys, one for residents/visitors and one for businesses, are available at this link on Speak Up Fayetteville, the City’s public engagement portal. Surveys close on Wednesday, August 21.

The Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce is hosting a public input event for businesses on Friday, August 9 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the NWA Fab Lab (123 W. Mountain St.).

Survey results will be shared at the City Council Agenda Session meeting on August 27.

City Council passed an ordinance banning the purchase of Polystyrene foam / Styrofoam™ products with City monies in May 2019.
