Section of Old Wire Road Closed 24/7 For Trail Tunnel Installation

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— The City of Fayetteville Transportation Division is installing a trail tunnel beneath Old Wire Road. This construction requires closing Old Wire Road to all traffic between N. Oak Bailey Drive and N. Crossover Road (Highway 265). Drivers in the area should look for detour signs. Only one property is accessed in this section and they have been given passage. This section of Old Wire Road will be closed 24 hours a day, seven days a week from Monday, July 22 through Friday, August 9. If the project is completed early, the road will be opened to thru traffic. The project also includes drainage improvements and asphalt overlay.

The tunnel is part of the Niokaska Creek Trail extension linking Gulley Park, along Old Wire Road, to Mud Creek Trail at Old Missouri Road. A primary goal of Fayetteville’s Active Transportation Plan is to “endeavor to build a trail connection within 1/2 mile of every residence.” When complete, the Niokaska Creek Trail will be more than three miles long and connect an estimated 4,000 residents within 1/4 mile of the trail. On the behalf of the City of Fayetteville, we would like to express our appreciation for your cooperation and understanding as we perform our work in this area. For additional information on the project, please contact the City of Fayetteville Transportation Division office at 479-575-8228. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
