Gregory Park Improvement Project Construction to Close Parking Lot for Four Months
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— The City of Fayetteville Parks and Recreation Department has contracted with 81 Construction Group to refurbish the parking lot, add accessible sidewalks, and make additional improvements to Gregory Park. The work will enhance access to the park and create more space to accommodate increased usage.
Work will begin on Monday, July 29 and take approximately four months to complete. Inclement weather could delay the project timeline. Please keep out of the construction area and use extreme caution when near the work site and watch for personnel and equipment.
Trails will remain open during construction; however, the parking lot will be closed to vehicles. Please do not park in parking lots reserved for patrons of nearby businesses. Street parking is available on residential streets near the park such as Woolsey Avenue, Green Valley Avenue, and Woodland Avenue. Ozark Regional Transit’s Route 10 has stops nearby on College Avenue.
Ozark Off-Road Cyclists (OORC), a Northwest Arkansas regional mountain biking advocacy group, began the Gregory Park Improvement Project in 2018 with support from the Walton Family Foundation. Numerous organizations have been involved in the project including OORC volunteers who donated more than 1,000 hours to trail building.
Renovations will help the park continue to serve as a natural area in a neighborhood near Woodland Junior High School, College Avenue/Highway 71B, and adjacent to the Veterans Hospital campus. The skills track and gravity trail improvements at the park also created a practice course for nearby school teams participating in the new National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) mountain biking programs for student athletes.
In August, a mural depicting a cyclist and an Arkansas-native skink will be applied by visual artist Jason Jones. The mural is being donated to the City of Fayetteville from OORC with support from Experience Fayetteville.
