Low Levels of Microcystin at Lake Fayetteville, Advisory Dismissed
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— Results from water samples taken at Lake Fayetteville on Tuesday, June 11 show microcystin levels of less than 3 micrograms per liter (ug/L). This is below the advisory level of 10 ug/L. The City of Fayetteville’s issued an advisory about Lake Fayetteville mircocystin levels on June 7 and on May 17 because samples showed elevated levels.
Lake visitors no longer need to take extra precautions when near the water.
Microcystin is an algae toxin released during decay of some algae types when present in a large group (called a “bloom”). Excessive application of landscaping fertilizers, which contain nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous, promotes algae growth. City officials remind residents and businesses to be aware of materials such as fertilizers, petroleum products, detergents, etc. that rain washes into our natural waterways and infrastructure.
