City Plans Bicycle “Slow Roll” Event as Part of First Thursday May 2
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — To kick off May as National Bike Month, the City of Fayetteville has organized its fourth Slow Roll bicycle ride as part of First Thursday festivities on May 2, 2019.
A Slow Roll is a group bike ride in which the point is not to race but to relax and enjoy good company and an enjoyable ride. Slow Rolls have become popular in cities across the US because the rides appeal to a diverse audience and don’t require specialized equipment or training.
“It's not just cyclists at these rides, so you can leave your spandex at home,” said Dane Eifling, Bicycle and Pedestrian Programs Coordinator for the City of Fayetteville. “Everyone is welcome, regardless of age, experience, ability, or type of bike. We’re all just there to have fun.”
The Slow Roll begins at 5 p.m. with a meet and greet on the Fayetteville downtown square, along with free bike safety checks. At 6:15 p.m., Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan will read the City’s official Bike Month proclamation, and the ride begins immediately afterward. The route for this ride encompasses four miles and the group averages about six miles per hour. (See map for details of the full route.)
Don't have a bike? Don't worry! VeoRide bike-share bicycles will be available to anyone with a VeoRide account. Acquiring a VeoRide account is as easy as downloading the mobile app and scanning the QR code on one of the City’s VeoRide regular bikes or pedal-assist Ebikes. The cost is just $.50 for 15 minutes of ride time. To learn more about the City’s Bike Share program visit http://www.fayetteville-ar.gov/bikeshare.
May 2 marks the beginning of Fayetteville’s First Thursday events, which take place on the first Thursday evening of each month from May through October. The festivities include live music, art booths, street performances, children’s activities, food trucks, a craft beer garden and more. First Thursday is presented by Experience Fayetteville.
