Fayetteville Urban Forester, John Scott, Receives Professional Award

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— The City of Fayetteville’s Urban Forester, John Scott, was presented with the Outstanding Professional of the Year Award by the Arkansas Urban Forestry Council (AUFC) in March. The award annually recognizes a professional who has shown dedication to urban and community forestry. In John’s nomination, he was referred to as a “Champion for Trees” and “The Lorax” after a fictional character who “speaks for the trees” in a popular Dr. Seuss book.

As an urban forester, John works with the public, reviewing proposed developments to be constructed within the city limits and advising on tree plantings and landscape installations for City projects. He also works closely with a variety of internal City customers such as Engineering, Parks and Recreation, Planning, Transportation, City Council, and Mayor Lioneld Jordan to administer the Tree Preservation and Protection Ordinance of the Unified Development Code. In addition, he provides staff support and meets regularly with the Urban Forestry Advisory Board (UFAB), which advises City Council and the Mayor on all arboricultural issues. John’s accomplishment with spearheading UFAB’s new annual program, “The Amazing Trees of Fayetteville” was noteworthy in his award consideration.

John joined the City of Fayetteville in 2015. He received his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and his Masters of Planning from Kansas State University.
