Changes to Trash, Recycling, Compost Programs and Rates Begin April 22
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— Starting on Monday, April 22 (Earth Day), the City of Fayetteville will implement new recycling and trash collection rates and new waste diversion programs. These new rates and programs were approved by City Council in January and are designed to help meet goals of Fayetteville’s 10-year Solid Waste Reduction, Diversion and Recycling Master Plan as well as the City’s Energy Action Plan.
The overarching goal of the master plan is to achieve 40% waste diversion by the year 2027; currently the City’s waste diversion rate is 19%. Diverting waste will also help reach an Energy Action Plan goal to reduce the City’s greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050.
“The City of Fayetteville is very excited to provide more equitable access to recycling programs for our residents living in multi-family housing,” said Mayor Lioneld Jordan. He added: “Additionally, scaling up our food waste composting is also a major step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and keeping resources out of our landfill.”
Services and rates will change across all customer classifications; changes include:
- Expanding curbside recycling to apartment complexes with 24 units or fewer
- All-inclusive trash and recycling pricing for multi-family and small commercial complexes (previously these customers paid an additional fee for recycling services)
- Discounted pricing for commercial cardboard and paper recycling
- Transition commercial glass recycling from pilot project to full service
- Transition commercial food waste composting from pilot project to full service
- Rate increase for tipping fees at transfer station to encourage diversion (out-of-City rate includes a premium for use of City resources)
- Collection rates for single family residential and duplex customers will increase by 5%
Customers are encouraged to review their accounts and look for opportunities to decrease fees by recycling more, purchasing items with less packaging, composting, and other habits.
