New Participants Invited to Register for Community Garden Plots on March 2
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— Gardening season is just around the corner and Fayetteville Parks and Recreation has a limited number of community garden plots available for new gardeners! Registration for NEW gardeners (who are not currently participating in the program) is on Saturday, March 2, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Fayetteville Senior Activity and Wellness Center in Walker Park (945 S. College Ave.). Plots are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.
The City of Fayetteville’s Community Gardens in the Parks program offers residents an opportunity to rent a garden plot for a nominal fee, providing individuals and families a place to grow fresh produce, learn about gardening, and meet new people in the community.
Plots are available at the Walker Park Community Garden (adjacent to the Fayetteville Senior Activity and Wellness Center) and at the Jefferson Community Garden (Fayetteville Adult Education Center, formerly Jefferson Elementary School, at 612 S. College Ave). Plot fees are $20 for a 30- to 50-square-foot bed or $40 for a 90- to 100-square-foot bed. The garden season lasts from March through February and the plot fee includes water and a limited amount of seeds. Gardeners with excess produce are welcome to donate their extras to each other, the Senior Center, the Yvonne Richardson Community Center, or organizations of their choice.
To find out more about the community gardens or plot registration, please contact Kristina Jones at parksvolunteer@fayetteville-ar.gov or 479-444-3467. More information is also available at www.fayetteville-ar.gov/communitygardens.
