Fayetteville Senior Center Celebrates Sunroom Renovations
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— Mayor Lioneld Jordan invites all to a ribbon cutting celebration for recently completed renovations to the sunroom at the Walker Park Senior Adult and Wellness Center (945 S. College Ave.). The event is at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 12.
“The sunroom renovations have made the space more popular than ever,” said Chase Gipson, senior center director. “Previously, the covered porch area was not regularly used by our clients. The enclosed room now allows us to have events and activities year-round, and the additional square footage can accommodate more participants in our programs. New people have joined the watercolor painting class and Canasta group since the renovation was completed. The partition doors give us the added flexibility of having multiple activities in the space at one time. The sunroom will also provide space where seniors can experience the health benefits of sunlight and the great outdoors on those days when it is too cold or too hot for them to be outside, while also providing a great connection to our large patio and garden beds.”
Renovations include new windows with screens and a French door, new floor tiles with radiant heating, new LED track lighting, ceiling fans, electrical outlets, and a HVAC unit. The doorway between the sunroom the Center’s main room was enlarged so the. space could function as one large meeting room if needed. Some upgrades include repurposed materials from the previous sunroom. The project totaled $55,000 and was funded through a City of Fayetteville Community Development Block Grant. Additionally, sales tax revenue funded flooring replacement by a City crew in the entry lobby, dining area, weight room, pool room, and library.
More than 1,500 Fayetteville seniors visit and/or benefit from programs offered by the center and Meals on Wheels. The Senior Center was built and 2003; the City contracts with the Northwest Arkansas Area Agency on Aging to provide programming.
