City of Fayetteville Offers FREE Smart Cycling Classes for Adults
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— In response to the Northwest Arkansas region’s growing cycling population, the City of Fayetteville is offering Smart Cycling classes as part of an ongoing effort to foster confident and safe riding habits. The FREE classes include three hours of classroom learning and two hours of on-bike training.
Classes are for adults and mature teens (must have guardian/parent approval) with beginner to intermediate cycling abilities. Participants are encouraged to bring their own helmets and personal bicycles that are in good working order. Helmets are required, and loaners will be available. VeoRide bikeshare bikes will be made available for participants without a personal bicycle.
The Smart Cycling curriculum is set by the League of American Bicyclists and the class is taught by a League-certified instructor. Participants learn the rights and responsibilities for cyclists, accident avoidance techniques, basic bike repair, and perform skill drills.
Classes are held at Ozark Literacy Council (2596 N Keystone Crossing, Fayetteville, AR 72703) on the following Saturdays: February 16, March 16, April 6, April 27, June 8, and June 29. Instruction is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break. Classes are limited to six students per instructor. To reserve a space, please contact the program coordinator, Dane, by telephone 479-575-8243 or email deifling@fayetteville-ar.gov.
