Southbound Lanes on College Avenue Near North Street Closed for Water Main Repair
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— City of Fayetteville crews will work during the night to repair a water main on N. College Avenue near the Veteran’s Administration campus and North Street. Work requires closing both southbound lanes and the turning lane on N. College Avenue between Memorial Drive and North Street. The closure will begin at 11 p.m. on Thursday, January 17. Crews will work to locate and repair the leak as quickly as possible; however, the lanes could remain closed through 11 a.m. on Friday, January 18.
Please consider using an alternate route. Use extreme caution when traveling in the work area and allow yourself extra travel time.
Lane closures at this intersection causes traffic to become congested with long lines of traffic. City staff places barrels and signage on the roadway per federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) requirements. Crews may add additional barrels and signage to ensure the safety of workers. Drivers should obey traffic warning signs at all times.
Fayetteville’s water distribution infrastructure includes more than 782 miles of water mains, 4,449 fire hydrants and 13,654 valves. Water main breaks happen for a variety of reasons – age, shift in soil (caused by nearby construction, extremely dry/wet soil, thawing), sudden water pressure changes, etc. Breaks also take different forms which require different kinds of repair. Crews dig to locate breaks and once found, make appropriate repairs. Replacement of pipes are considered capital expenses due to the cost. City staff works with City Council Water, Sewer, and Solid Waste Committee members to prioritize projects and allocate resources.
