Contractors Begin Project to Analyze Conditions of Fayetteville’s Roads and Sidewalks


FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— On October 2, 2018, Fayetteville City Council approved a contact with IMS Infrastructure Management Services LLC to perform an inventory and analysis of the City’s street pavement and sidewalk conditions.


IMS will be conducting the first phase of data collection in November on streets classified as arterials and collectors. Residents may periodically see IMS trucks with trailers on roadways. The trailers are conducting “deflection testing” which measures the structural condition of the pavement and its ability to carry traffic loads (weight, speed, number of vehicles).


The contract with IMS includes the following:

  • Deflection testing of arterials and collectors
  • Collection of pavement surface condition data and assigning a pavement condition index value (PCI)
  • Development of pavement rehabilitation recommendations, and development of a 5-year pavement preservation plan using techniques that are appropriate for the level of pavement distress
  • Inventory and condition assessment of sidewalks and ADA ramps

The project is scheduled to be completed by the spring of 2019 and will result in a comprehensive pavement and sidewalk management plan. All work will be documented in the City’s GIS mapping system to enable staff to update and manage pavement and sidewalk related work. The plan and associated GIS data will provide a structured method to prioritize transportation work and help maximize the impact of transportation funding.
