City Honored as 2017 Tree City USA and Plants New Trees in Wilson Park
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Fayetteville was named a 2017 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation earlier this month in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. A bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa), donated by the Tree City USA program and with the cooperation of the Arkansas Forestry Commission, will be planted in recognition of Arbor Day by Mayor Lioneld Jordan and City staff at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27 in Wilson Park.
The planting also celebrates a Parks and Recreation Department regenerative tree planting initiative in Wilson Park. Four trees will be planted to replace mature trees and help reforest the stream banks. By taking a proactive approach, the City’s oldest park will continue to have a full canopy. Additionally, seven trees will be planted around the Downtown Square and another five trees will be planted in David Lashley Park.
National Arbor Day is celebrated every year on the last Friday in April in the United States. Several events are being held are in recognition of Arbor Day such as the invasive plant removal, hosted by the Urban Forestry Advisory Board, in Clarence Craft Park on Saturday, April 28.
The City of Fayetteville recognizes and promotes the value of a healthy urban forest. To learn more about the benefits of trees and the City’s Urban Forestry program, please visit this webpage.
