City Encourages Composting by Selling Discounted Composting Equipment
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— The City of Fayetteville encourages residents to compost as a way to reduce waste sent to the landfill. The City is working with a vendor to sell compost bins, composting accessories, and rain barrels for a limited time through May 27. Purchased items will be available for pick up on Saturday, June 8.
Thanks to a grant from Boston Mountain Solid Waste District, a compost bin kit is available for a cost of $25 to 150 Fayetteville residents on a first come first serve basis. The kit includes an Earth Machine Backyard Composter, kitchen scrap collection pail, and an education dial about composting. The next 100 residents who purchase an Earth Machine Backyard Composter for $49.95 will receive a kitchen scrap collection pail and education dial at no additional charge.
Items are available for sale online now through Monday, May 27 at www.fayetteville-ar.gov/compostbinsale
. All orders must be picked up on Saturday, June 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in a City parking lot located across the street from the Happy Hollow Recycling Drop-Off Center (1420 S. Happy Hollow Rd.).
“In 2017, the City of Fayetteville passed a resolution to get Fayetteville on a path to 40% waste diversion by 2027,” said Mayor Lioneld Jordan. He continued, “Consumer waste reduction, recycling, and composting are all key steps towards meeting this goal. Thanks to a grant from Boston Mountain Solid Waste District, the City of Fayetteville is making available for purchase discounted backyard composting bins. This will help residents reduce waste, protect the environment, and grow healthy plants.”
The goal of this program is to divert food scraps from the waste stream and raise awareness about the benefits of composting. Compost Awareness Week is May 5 through 11.
