Utility Box Art Program – Call for Artist Proposals

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The City of Fayetteville requests proposals from volunteer artists for the Utility Box Art Program. The program is a graffiti abatement initiative of the Keep Fayetteville Beautiful Committee and Fayetteville Police Department’s Community Policing Division.Program. The deadline for proposals is 5 p.m. on Friday, April 13.

Artists’ proposals should reflect the program themes: recycling or waste reduction, abstract art, Fayetteville history, or nature. The utility boxes measure approximately six-feet high, three-feet wide, and two-feet deep (6’ x 3’ x 2’). The proposal can be site-specific or existing work. Please note that this is a volunteer program and stipends are not available for artists. Funds allotted to this project are for supplies only. Three locations are available:
  • Utility box at southwest corner of N. College Ave. and Sunbridge Dr.
  • Utility box at northwest corner of N. Gregg Ave. and Sycamore St.
  • Utility box at southwest corner of W. North St. and Garland Ave.

The Utility Box Art Program fulfills the Keep Fayetteville Beautiful mission, “Helping create pride and responsibility in our community environments.” The program started in 2013, working with local artists to paint the boxes. It has been extremely successful and discourages graffiti, tagging, and vandalism on utility boxes.

Donations from citizens and community organizations make the program possible by supplying artists with paint and materials. Please contact Brian Pugh is you would like to donate to the program.

Visit the Keep Fayetteville Beautiful webpage to read about and download the submission form or contact Brian Pugh for a paper application. You can find images and details about the Utility Box Art program on the Fayetteville Art Walk interactive map.
