Mayor Jordan Issues Statement Regarding Library Expansion Due to Court Decision

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Arkansas Supreme Court upheld a lower court decision ruling today, favoring Washington Regional Medical Center (WRMC) as the rightful owner of the former Fayetteville City Hospital property. Litigation has been ongoing since 2012. The decision enables WRMC to sell the four-acre property to the Fayetteville Public Library. The Library’s existing building and grounds are adjacent to former hospital property.

Mayor Lioneld Jordan issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling:

I am so happy with this decision. We can move forward with an expansion of this City’s world-class library. Our library is one of the crown jewels of Fayetteville.

The  Blair Library is truly accessible to all and provides so many different programs that are of great value to our citizens, young and old, and particularly to children and students of our schools. The Library’s continual efforts for digital inclusion allows access to library materials online, 24/7, regardless of location. This free and public access strengthens our community and empowers our citizens.

I am a lifelong library lover, spending many hours in the library and I am so happy this project can now finally move forward to benefit all of our citizens here in Fayetteville.

The Library has seen a 44% increase in materials circulation since the new building opened in 2004 (moved from E. Dickson Street). Approximately 184 people per hour use the Library and visits number 619,000 in 2015. The Library’s website address is

The City’s Purchasing department is working with the Library to develop and issue a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for architectural design and construction management.
